The city witnessed sporadic power cuts on Wednesday and also over the weekend as the demand for power shot up and generation at some power plants in the state was below the expected level. With the onset of summer, the demand is likely to swell, a senior Bescom official told to The New Indian Express.
“The state is struggling to maintain continuous power supply owing to the gap between demand and generation and can scrape through the summer without too many power cuts only if it is able to make judicious use of power,” he suggested.
BESCOM officials maintained that there is no loadshedding and said that the power cuts happen when the load is too much.
“Such cuts cannot be announced in advance as sometimes the demand goes up in an unanticipated manner,” a Bescom source said.
KPTCL data shows that the demand for power during the weekend was about 125 million units per day and is likely to go up to 140 MU as the summer peaks.
When asked about the measures being undertaken to curb power wastage Tushar Girinath, managing director of BESCOM, said that: “It boils down to people to refrain from wasting power.
On Monday, BESCOM held meeting with owners of shops, malls and hoardings asking them to reduce their power consumption by 25 per cent to which they agreed.” He prophesied the air-conditioners to be the major culprits during summer. “If theatres and other large establishments could bring down their AC consumption by strictly monitoring the usage and controlling it, things would be much better,” he said.
